Since the day JJ learnt how to talk, his mother taught him all about myths, legends and folklore in hopes of him having a better understanding of many things from the real world. But when she leaves JJ to deal with his alcoholic, abusive father at just ten years old, JJ loses all hope. For if her and his dad were destined to be together like she said they were, like the red thread of fate legend said they were, why did she leave? And if it was all a lie, that meant JJ would never find the person who was created and destined to be with him. But then, he meets Pope. All anxiety and calm tied together in a sweet, joyful package that made JJ’s heart race whenever he spoke or whenever his stunning hazel eyes would catch his. But also the one person he could not have. Just how much can JJ take of not being able to express his feelings before everything comes pouring out?

Summary
There’s just something about Pope Heyward that JJ finds so captivating. So Fascinating. It’s a wonder he hasn’t flunk out of school from how often his thoughts drift to the boy. If he wasn’t always alone he might’ve had the courage to actually talk to him.
After a particularly nasty fight with his dad, he finds himself watching Pope from atop the cliff overlooking the Boneyard, slowly drinking himself into an unaware mess. From there things sort of get a bit tricky.
Because Pope finds him and sort of implies that they’re not strangers. That JJ hasn’t been so alone all this time. That JJ’s earned his trust, despite only having talked four times outside of school, to know his deepest secret. Which if you knew anything about Maybanks in general, the fact that Pope Heyward trusts him with that secret is frankly unbelievable.
And apparently JJ’s blatant obsession with Pope isn’t at all surprising to him.

Or, after Luke takes things too far, JJ ends up in a group home on the mainland. He spends the summer fighting to survive, thinking his friends hate him and want him gone, not knowing that they’re spending the summer trying desperately to reach him. What will it take for him to get home? Unlikely friendships, eventual JJPope, and I promise it will have a happy ending!!

That was until he set eyes on JJ again, and he thought he had gone completely insane because there was no way he could do what had crossed his mind. But Kie was gaining on him, halfway up the dock now, and he had to do something. Anything to avoid her confronting him about the letter.
So he did.
He grabbed JJ's face, catching him completely off-guard, and placed his lips on his, kissing him like his life depended on it. Because, in that moment, it felt like it did.
