Castorice rolls her eyes. “As if plating isn’t just sculpture with food.”
He opens his mouth to fire back a snide rejoinder, realizes she’s right, and holds his tongue instead. She’s doing him a favor, forcing him out of his house, one of his only friends who’s stuck with him over the past year of tremendous, never-ending grief. No one knows how to deal with a widower’s pain and loss. No one wants to. But Castorice has faced even more death than he has, and she hasn’t let him pull away from the world despite his attempts.
After the unexpected death of his partner, Khaslana, about a year ago, Mydei meets photographer Phainon at a gallery exhibition he's forced to attend by his friend, Castorice. Unexpected sparks fly between them as they grow closer through Phainon's photography.

The day is pleasant—or it was—with the sun warm and bright in a cloudless sky painted truest blue, a gentle breeze from the south easing the heat. A wonderful day to sit and enjoy tea by the harbor. But now Neuvillette is here, and Zhongli won’t suffer her presence. Not with Neuvillette’s intent to judge her hanging over her head.
When Neuvillette goes into heat for the first time, she turns to Zhongli for assistance.

When Neuvillette is snowed into his bed and breakfast in small-town Poisson, he and another guest, Wriothesley, are forced to weather the complications together.

Summary
Neuvillette knows little of what it means to be a dragon; he has spent his entire life among the people of Fontaine. Everything he does know about dragons, he has uncovered himself through trial and error and the occasional bit of obscure research. But this, at least, he recognizes.
Mating instincts.
By protecting him, the duke is behaving like a dragon seeking a mate, and that has triggered Neuvillette’s own instincts to judge the duke’s adequacy.
When Wriothesley begins acting like a dragon courting his mate, Neuvillette finds himself torn between duty and desire.

“I have heard,” Neuvillette says, each word cautiously ambling off his tongue, “of a game that humans play. A modification to the rules that might entice you to stay a while longer.”
Wriothesley waits, still wearing that smarmy grin, no doubt expecting Neuvillette to propose some obscure and complicated variant of chess.
“The game is typically played with cards,” Neuvillette continues, “but I believe it will work just as effectively as a motivator in this scenario. For each game you win, I shall remove one article of clothing.”
The way the grin slides straight off Wriothesley's face is immensely satisfying, as is the movement of his scarred throat as it violently bobs. “You will— sorry, what?”
During a friendly game of chess, Neuvillette gets his draconic wires crossed.
