The James Maguire of it all had always been complicated - ever since he’d kissed her for the first time in that dusty house in Donegal, things had been complicated. It was sort of always destined to be, when you developed feelings for a close friend. Maybe when they were kids, it might have worked out, but they weren’t children anymore, and it was silly, to live a fantasy where James had waited all those years for her, silly to think that he still felt the same as he had back when they were seventeen. Erin might be fanciful, but she wasn't naive - not anymore.
or - Erin's final year of university brings about some reflection, introspection and the realisation that maybe the reason she had never fallen in love with anyone else was because she had never fallen out of love with James Maguire.

After the anonymous winner of the “Searching For Myself” writing contest is read aloud at a morning assembly, Erin finds herself with an anonymous pen pal of sorts.
Why is it so much easier to talk about her feelings with a stranger than it is her own family and friends? And it’s kind of fun. Like writing in a journal except the journal writes back!
But it’s not just a journal. There is a real life person on the other end of these conversations, and this small town is too small for something to stay secret for long.

Excerpt from Chapter Three:
"James glanced at the clock and dropped his head back down. He just needed to make it a little longer and then the day would be over. From the other side of the kitchen door, he hears Orla shout for last call, and he waits a minute. Michelle doesn’t come in with any last requests, so he jumps out of his apron and hairnet as fast as he possibly can. When he opens the door, he can hear the last shaky strains of Erin on the fiddle as the last song of the night ends, and he stands next to the bar for a moment, watching the band pack up. But he’s James, and he’s just so tired he can’t stand it, and he is tired of the dance he’s been locked into with Erin these past few days. His exhaustion overrides his overthinking, so he strides up to the stage and gently takes hold of Erin’s arm."A big thank you to SugaryRemus for reading over my work! :)
