Shane dropped his phone, not even watching as it clattered to the floor. This was happening. This was real. Hayden left behind Jackie. Jackie was a widow. Hayden’s kids were fatherless. Nothing will make me feel better for a long time. How was one to even move on? Suddenly, the definition of a long time changed for Shane into simply being forever.
He lay his head down on the kitchen island, his hot forehead connecting with the cool marble. What was there to say? What was there to do? His world was shattered. His best friend was gone. A husband, a father. Gone. Just like that. In just one night of sleep, Shane’s entire world crumbled.

Summary
After wielding the shield, Sam had been on a few missions here and there. But this one, this one is special. This one feels like a true Captain America mission. He hasn’t told Steve about it yet, but he knew he would. Steve has been all about hearing the missions, telling Sam after every story, “Gosh, I am so glad to be retired.” Sam always snorted because as if Steve could ever be still. The man was planting a huge garden and then filling all the flowerbeds with yellow roses, which he told Sam had been Bucky’s favorite.
But today, this mission would be one that Sam thinks he may need to force Steve to stay in retirement after he hears this story. Part of him considers not even telling Steve about it. Because seeing a blip on the radar placing an old Hydra base, not even Sam could believe that.
But he didn’t have time to reflect on this now. He has work to do. -
