Tsurugi is a bright child. Enthusiastic, curious, friendly. Madara took a good year to learn to love her.
Madara loves her, but she was born of violence and theft and appeared by surprise. He has to be her entire world, shield, scaffold to grow onto, and he wasn't ready.
He loves her now, though. She's his firstborn and heir and his blood, and she sings like a screechy bird in the bath and bites when tickled, and from the first day he could bring himself to hold her she has slept nowhere better than face down on his chest.

The wise ones know: fires can warm and not burn; and rivers, if given strength and permission, will carve the land.
