“Were you thinking of also bringing clothes?” Shane asked, glancing into Ilya’s suitcase.
“Do you think we will need them?”
“I’m just saying you might want the option of going outside,” Shane said, dropping a kiss on Ilya’s shoulder and wandering into the closet.
Ilya was obviously going to pack clothing, he just had priorities. Like making sure their whole sex toy collection would fit into his suitcase, not to mention two of the biggest bottles of lube he’d been able to find.
“Take the batteries out of anything that vibrates,” Shane called. Ilya rolled his eyes. What was he, an amateur? “Do you think I should bring two pairs of walking shoes or is one enough?”
“How many walking tours are we going on?”
“I don’t know.”
“How do you not know? What have you been doing for the past month?”
“Research! But I didn’t book anything yet in case we decide we want to just sit by the pool for ten days instead.”

Shane nodded, briefly letting his head drop to where Ilya's hand laid on his shoulder. The small bit of affection sent a warm surge through Ilya's chest.
Ilya's eyes dropped to Shane's hand, where he wore the onyx wedding band that matched his own. Whenever he felt anxious, looking at that seemed to help ground him, remind him that they had made it through so much already.

“Dada!” Misha yells, spotting him.
Ilya turns, already bracing himself. He’s mentally cataloging the damage. The inch of water on the floor. The soaked towels. The inevitable lecture.
But Shane cuts him off before he can say a word.“They’re happy,” Shane says simply, smiling.
Ilya blinks. “They are actively flooding the bathroom,” he says, wringing out a washcloth that immediately drips onto the tile again.
“As long as they’re clean,” Shane replies, easy, “we’ll put down towels.”
Ilya stares at him like he’s speaking a foreign language. This is the same man who once insisted the spice drawer be alphabetized (easy, when you never used any), threw a fit over a single water ring, and ran a three-hour Sunday deep clean before the cleaners even showed up.
Fatherhood has loosened him in ways Ilya still doesn’t fully understand. Maybe it’s knowing the chaos ends. Maybe it’s knowing this part is finite.
