His legs shook, and he’d blame the frightening fight for the trembling in his hands if it didn’t spread elsewhere. He’d yet to catch his breath, each moment he’d spent in the village one that pushed him closer to the edge of his sanity, the fissures growing with each encounter.
Each breath hurt, tight in his chest going in as it was coming out. The beat in his head matched the one of his heart, the same tic found in his fingertips—his stomach. Ethan shuddered, looking around for eavesdroppers before he pressed a fist into his abdomen, whimpering at the bottomless emptiness within. He could say—with all the confidence he had left—he’d never felt like this before.
