As he got older, and the more journeys he went on, he and his mom talked less and less. She started feeling more like a mother and less of a shoulder to lean on—and, eventually, they only talked when he got home from his journeys, when he would ultimately leave the next day after figuring out which league he wanted to throw his hat at next.
He didn’t intentionally stop calling his mother, it just slipped his mind more and more often as he got older and had fewer reasons to call.
Maybe that was where he went wrong.

He rubbed his eyes, watching over his best friend. They stung a little, his own nose clogged too, but his muzzle stayed dry. No matter how weird and out of character Sonic was acting due to his sickness. Usually he wouldn’t stop him even if Robotnik actually was close by, he trusted the fox to take care of himself. The hedgehog wasn’t the type to ask for company or seek him out. Tails was the clingy one. Tails was the one who needed his paw held in a reassuring manner.

Summary
After the events of the Metal Virus, it should’ve gotten better. And it does, briefly — with a party celebrating its extinction, they have their world back, their livelihood back, and more importantly, Sonic. But as Amy’s come to learn, it’s never as easy as it seems with him.
As the dust settles at Restoration HQ, the cracks begin to show. When she starts to pick up on the lasting effects of constantly burning off the virus, Amy offers to help care for Sonic’s quills and nurse them back to health. After all he’s done for them, it’s the least she can do. The role reversal is a change of pace, but one she takes to heart. And as they gather in her kitchen, as she tends to his sick quills, little does he know, it’s the most she’s ever felt in his shoes.
