Mikey doesn’t move. Patrick can see where his breath constricts. Chest half-moving up and down, Pete’s head pressing on it. His hand snakes around Mikey’s waist, and he angles his face so his cheek is against Mikey’s shoulder looking up through his eyelashes.
“Pete,” Mikey says, shakily.
“When’s the next time you’ll ever get to have this?” Pete asks, and Patrick thinks low blow.

Pete chews on his lower lip, staring into the bowl of milk like the dregs of it might function as tea leaves, somehow. This is the most honest Mikey’s ever been. Proven hypothesis: nobody wants that from him.
Pete says, “I need him like air.”
Mikey says, “That sounds nice.”
The year 2011: Pete gets a divorce. Patrick gets a solo tour. Mikey gets something else entirely.

The sound of the opposite door opening is deafening in the quiet. No one has oiled the hinges since Gerard left, and it shows in the way that they protest louder than they used to as it swings just wide enough to let a body inside, and then shriek even louder when it’s pulled shut.
Gerard’s heart has decided that it’s a good time to fall into a fit of hysteria. He swallows, nearly holding his breath.
The voice to his right side is hushed. “And the Holy Spirit,” it says.
