He shook his head furiously, choked sobs forcing their way out of his mouth as he shuffled backwards, hands scrabbling on the gravel and cutting into his palms. He didn’t notice the pain, too hopped up on adrenaline and fear to recognise it.
Without his permission, a chirp managed to escape, almost masked by his cries and incomprehensible pleading.
Almost masked.
Zephyrus paused in his approach, tensing at the sound and staring at Tommy, straightening up to his full height.
Tommy’s breathing became more frantic with the realisation that the man had heard. He knew now. That wasn’t good, that wasn’t safe. They were going to hurt him, they were going to kill him, Tommy didn’t want to die.
A coo reached his ears, the sound dancing on the wind. Safe-calm-protected.

Tommy is an avian hybrid training to be a hero. A wrench is thrown into his plans when he meets the Syndicate leader Zephyrus, and for some reason, his instincts seem to adore him. The feeling is mutual, so now Tommy has to try and live life while yearning for a family of supervillains that are actively trying to kidnap him.

“I read the papers,” Tommy chokes out- eyes wide in fear, “they’re going to attack, aren’t they?” Wilbur squints at him, trying to decipher which country he’s talking about. Oh, right. The Antarctic Empire will probably be the first one to reach them, after all.
Wilbur swallows, trying to soften his answer’s blow. “It’s possible,” he says, “yeah, maybe.” Tommy looks horrified. Wilbur needs to up his acting skills.

Summary
“You’re going to answer me, pup, or you’re not going to like the consequences.” Techno warns him, and Tommy nods his head slightly, trying his best not to get on Techno’s bad side.
“Good,” Techno practically purrs, before he tilts his head every which way, as if he was looking for something. His chest rumbles deeply in a reassuring manner, as he tries to get Tommy to calm down like he was some small little pup. It works, no matter how much Tommy hates that it does but the noise has his muscles relaxing, the tension draining from his limbs.
Techno gives him a pleased look, rubbing his massive thumb along his cheek, tracing one of the scars there. Tommy tries his best not to wither under his intense gaze.
Or Tommy gets himself into trouble with the Syndicate, a dangerous trio of mer, and ends up becoming part of their pod.

Summary
Tommy wakes up to a yell. Not a knock or his door opening, a yell. It's different, it's new. Nothing ever changes here. Every morning he wakes up to white walls and chemical smells. Every day he wakes up when a scientist enters his room, he goes to testing, gets breakfast, goes back into the room, and gets dinner. That never changes.
Until now apparently.
