Summary
Bucky stood slowly, approaching Yelena carefully as her gaze remained stuck to her own hands. There was no blood on them, but she felt the warm, crimson liquid on her skin regardless.
“Hey, I’m okay, you didn’t hurt me.” Bucky breathed, gently taking her wrists in his hands. Yelena shook her head.
“Come back to bed.” He murmured, but didn’t pull her towards it.
Yelena blinked, her vision blurring as she began to sob soundlessly. Bucky’s gaze softened even more, and he inhaled deeply, gathering her into his arms. She cried, his warm skin around hers only urging her on.

Sam tilted his head, looking behind Bucky, “Where is she? Don’t tell me you didn’t bring her.” He said, face growing serious.
Bucky rolled his eyes, “She’s with your sister. They’re prepping the fish.”
Sam narrowed his eyes at him, and Bucky scowled, voice growing defensive, “What? You think she’s going to corrupt her or something?”
“She’s a trained assassin, Buck.” Sam stated, as if saying that gave any sense to his accusation.
“Yeah, so am I.” Bucky growled, crossing his arms over his chest.

Yelena then whistled a note, reminiscent of a bird call. Bucky watched her lips move, knowing there once had been a matching note.
Yelena inhaled deeply, petting the stone. Bucky watched silently, close enough for her to feel his presence. She stood, fingers still attempting to touch the stone even as she stepped away.
Bucky followed, taking Yelena’s hand in his. She gripped it, eyes trailing on the pictures scattered around the still vibrant flowers and plants. Natasha’s smile and warm, green eyes catching Yelena’s gaze in every picture.

Bucky swallowed back bile when he saw the pool of blood on the floor and Yelena’s chest rising and falling rapidly as she took quick, shallow breaths. She gave him a weak grin, whispering a small, 'Hi'.
Bucky blinked, and in a flash, scooped her up in his arms, clutching her carefully. Yelena whimpered from the sudden move and settled her head against his chest plate. Alexei protested but Bucky ignored him as he whispered back, “Hi, love.”

Bucky cupped her cheek, “You deserve happiness, Yelena. But knowing what life could’ve been like if you or I hadn’t been taken, won’t do you any good. I know it’s harsh, but this is the life that we’re stuck with. We just have to make the best of it.”
Yelena’s hot breath fanned over his lips as she listened, then nodded slowly. She smiled a little, murmuring, “Then we’ll make the best of it.”
Before Bucky could respond, Yelena got up on her tippy toes and took his lips in hers in a suddenly heated kiss.
When they pulled away, she smirked, “So, is the dance over?”
Bucky watched her, a little breathless. He rolled his eyes, grinning, “No, that isn’t how a courtship works.”
Yelena rolled her eyes back at him, “Okay then, old man. Let’s go.” She pulled him towards his parked motorcycle and he followed, grinning.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes, now a part of the New Avengers, struggles with balancing his role whilst also attempting to deal with the trauma he’s collected over the decades.
As Steve and Peggy try to find and rescue the Bucky of their time, Bucky of 2025 - quite literally - fades in and out of existence. Can Yelena and the rest of the Thunderbolts save their friend, or have Captain America and Agent Carter messed everything up?

Instead of accepting the job to assassinate Clint, Yelena decides to track him down for information about what happened to Natasha, and runs into Bucky on her way. They find out they have more in common than they thought, and navigate their traumas together. Post-Endgame, canon divergence from "Hawkeye" and "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier".
