“Why are you here?” She asked, her voice betraying her exhaustion.
“To see if you’re doing all right.”
“I assume that Ray asked you to take pity on me.”
“No, ma’am. He didn’t need to ask me to do anything. By the end, we called each other brothers. That makes it my business to see you’re taken care of.” He pulled an envelope of money out of his pants pocket and held it out so she could reluctantly take it. “I didn’t know your son for very long, but there was a lot of love between us. We saved each other many times.”
He instantly regretted saying the last part. Part of him expected her to throw him out. Instead, she asked:
“Would you like something of his?”
He almost couldn’t believe his ears.
“I’d really appreciate a picture, please, if you can spare one."
She nodded, rose, and left, leaving Pete to his own thoughts. He couldn’t help but take a closer look at his surroundings.
One of the pictures on the wall caught his eye. It was Ray.
