Summary
There was something different about the man. Despite his youthful look, there was a heaviness to his shoulders that said he had hardened through prolonged suffering. His smile, his laugh, the way his eyes crinkled in the corner, it was definitely a slipping mask. The way Orpheus held himself was too rigid, too perfected, and he noticed the rise and fall of the brunet's chest was too long between his conversations and rest.
The man was peculiar. Yet, no matter what, his eyes always found the other's, and he gazed at him like he was a meal to be devoured, yet there was an odd reverence that was mixed within the hunger.
Fredrick didn't want to admit it intrigued him, even less that he wanted to tread that danger willingly, even if it meant falling into the maw of the novelist.

Summary
Sleep has begun to allude him. Fatigue and exhaustion weigh on his mind, yet the minute his head hits the pillow he could not find adequate sleep. There was always a dull buzz in the back of his head, a warning sign that grew louder and louder each day. Some nights he swore he heard a harsh breath above his bed, other nights he heard a rustle of...something in the corner of the room.
Each night, when he reached that limbo place between unconsciousness and consciousness, it was if he was in a never ending dream.
Or a never ending nightmare.

Summary
The cake is small, barely risen with the lack of baking soda, and the frosting is messy and sticky warm from the melted sugar. A small, makeshift candle is put into it by Memory, who laughs and bounds up to her father's lap. Across the way, slowly coming towards them, is Frederick, holding a box of matches before he lights one to ignite the candle wick.
"Happy birthday!" they both say in unison to him.

Summary
He should feel tolerance, not affection, not love, when he's around Orpheus. He should not lean into his space at proximity, should not tuck his bangs behind his ear when Orpheus whispers to him. He absolutely, knowingly should not keep his hold loose on the handle of his hidden gun within the cane. He should hate Orpheus, not be smiling at a poor joke the novelist makes.
And yet. And yet...
He gives his hand when Orpheus asks, lets himself be pulled into dark corners for bated breaths and fever kisses, allows those scarred hands to secure his waist. Opens his mouth without prompting when Orpheus makes a pleading noise, drowns within the kisses and clings to the novelist's hair and shoulders. The insecure, ugly part of himself that sought validation rears its head at his logical side, reminds him: This is temporary, he'll drop you once your use has ended.
The greedy, selfish part of him sneers back: Then we stay useful, so he can never leave.
(Frederick questions his connection to Orpheus. Orpheus wonders what Frederick's ring size is.)

Summary
Viktor has known Lord Talis since they were both young children. The two of them practically grew up together. They have held a close friendship, so it comes as no surprise that Viktor has harbored romantic feelings over the years in secrecy. After years of unceasing yearning that goes unnoticed by Jayce, Viktor decides to finally attempt to move on from him.
At least that is the case until Jayce returns from his travels that summer, looking more handsome than ever and garnering the attention of all the ton. In a fit of jealousy and tired of being overlooked, Viktor will acquire Sky's and Jinx's help to finally stand out among the ton. Will his efforts lead him to finding true love elsewhere, or will they inescapably lead him right back to Lord Talis' arms?

Summary
Jayce looks at Viktor, taking in the indecisiveness on his face, the tightness in his shoulders, the haunted look in his eyes that never quite goes away anymore. And something inside him clicks into place.
It's not that Viktor doesn’t want him.
It’s that Viktor doesn’t trust himself to want.
"Is that what you need, Viktor?" Jayce asks, eyes softening. "For someone to take the choice away from you? Because I can do that for you, if you'll let me. I can take control from here on out and you'll never to worry about anything else. Would you like that?"
Viktor's eyes are wide, lips parted from where his mouth has fallen open slightly, and for a moment, he seems speechless, but then he nods, a small, barely perceptible shake of his head that reveals more than enough of his longing. "Please."
After waking up in an unfamiliar timeline, Jayce and Viktor find it all too easy to fall into bed together instead of talking about their feelings. This, naturally, leads to consequences neither are prepared for.
Like unwittingly falling into a dom/sub dynamic, for example.
