“Lukas?” Miss Melody says. “Can you come with me?”
Lukas feels his throat go tight. “Uh—”
“You’re not in trouble,” she says, as everyone turns to face him now. “I just need you to come with me.”
“It’s alright, Lukas,” Mr. Hammond says, nodding at him.
Lukas swallows hard and nods back, quickly gathering his things and shoving them into his bag, grabbing his phone and slipping it into his pocket. He gets up and weaves around the desk as he moves towards the door, following Miss Melody out into the hallway. His heart is hammering in his ears and he tries to guess what in the hell this is about. “What’s going on?” he asks, barely able to form the question.

Specks of dust swirl in the gold of sunlight pooling through the break in his curtains. Philip watches their listless dance, listening to the hum of silence. It was a game he used to play with his mother. Day stars she used to say, smiling like she could see the universe painted across blenched wallpapers. It hadn't occurred to Philip yet, she probably was. They'd chase constellations in the lazy descent of things shriveled and dead. It was one of the first pictures he had taken.
A pale hand rises beside him, pointing towards the cavalcade of dust drowning in light. Looks like stardust, Lukas says.
Philip closes his eyes.

When you join the New Directions, you always get more than you bargained for. But what if joining the glee club happens because of an ulterior motive that gets in the way of the experience of opening yourself up to joy? Dave's next door neighbor and new best friend joins glee club to help get Dave and Kurt closer together, but its honestly not that great a plan. Spectacular backfiring is maybe not a strong enough sentiment in this case.

Originally posted to FFdotnet; this has been slightly edited, proofed, and tweaked though any changes are very minor. This tells a story of the several months leading up to and following David Karofsky's suicide attempt. A Kurtofsky ship approached with logic and awareness, "Strange Currencies" provides the backstory of Dave after "Prom Queen" when he transferred to Thurston. This story respects canon through "On My Way", after which it corrects the gross mistakes and omissions of Season 3 definitively and negates Season 4. Dedicated to my own David K. "...with love come strange currencies."
