They just kissed now sometimes – much to the annoyance of Crystal when they were trying to focus on a case. One thing had felt slightly wrong, now, though – Charles’s constantly calling Edwin ‘mate’. It hits him suddenly, on a normal day picked seemingly at random: Kaeya's effectively spent more of his life in Mondstadt than in Khaenri'ah.
It's not something that's especially profound or noteworthy; if it had truly mattered, it would have occurred to him last year, when the number of years he'd spent in Mondstadt had actually outpaced the number of years he'd spent in Khaenri'ah — but no. It hits well into the evening service at Angel's Share, between one drink and the next. It's uncomfortable, in all the ways it refuses to leave him alone — irritating, in all the ways his mind has somehow made it significant, when it deserves no importance at all.
—frightening, when it suddenly renders everything just slightly out of joint.
