“But you got me thinking last night,” says Nick. “I couldn’t stand that you thought I just wanted to throw you a—a—”
“Pity fuck?” Charlie smirks over his tea.
Nick shakes his head and digs into his own pastry. “Yes, that. You’ve been waiting all these years to meet someone who makes you feel safe and loved. And God, Charlie, you’re my best friend. Of course I want you to have that experience for your first time. So many people’s first times are utter shit. Mine was utter shit. I’d be an awful friend if I didn’t want you to have the best possible experience.”
Charlie has no idea where he’s going with this.
“So,” Nick says, a little nervous, “if you don’t want the first experience to be with me, then as your best friend, I feel it is my duty to help you find the person it will be with. If you want.”

The worst thing is—this isn’t the first time it has happened. This has been going on for weeks now, even if he didn’t want to believe it. Every time he tries to initiate intimacy, Nick finds a way to hedge. Charlie has been blinding himself. He’s become addicted to the stars, and he has squeezed his eyes for too long just to see them.
