“Play your game,” he said sharply. His tone wasn’t to be missed. It was small, but wrong. Shane stiffened as the words reached him.
Across the ice, Wyatt visibly perked up like a man spotting live television drama. There it was, the hairline fracture.

“I love you. Always you,” he croaked out, his throat on fire. She held back her tears for a moment, listening intently.
“It’s always been you. In every life. Every time. I will always love you. I would do it all again.” He tried his best to put on a smile.
“I would hold the sky again. I would leap into the pit. You…were my anchor. I loved you… from the moment I saw you. I’ll wait for you, Wise Girl. I always will.”
Smiling through the pain was getting easier, feeling fading. He felt blood trickle from the corners of his mouth and he hoped his face didn’t look too horrid. He’d hate for her to remember him as a mess in his last moments. When he choked on the blood in his throat, he knew it was about time; but he couldn’t stomach the look on her face.
“Smile for me, Wise Girl.” He knew these would be his last words. He could tell she tried. Through tears and pain, she tried. “There it is,” he said, “So beautiful. So perfect.”

“Yeah, I thought that was the deal too,” Annabeth agreed.
“I don’t like the sound of it, this prophecy. Seven? When has seven ever been a good number for a quest? And only demigods. Giants can only be defeated by gods and heroes together. How do they expect seven demigods to defeat them? The gods are fracturing and we all know its only going to get worse.” Then a thought seemed to occur to Thalia, and her jaw went slack.
Annabeth could see Thalia had caught up. They both knew they were thinking of the same person, Annabeth could see it in her sister’s eyes; the image of a god that was purely Greek, undivided, with every reason to be involved in the progress of a demigod’s prophecy. They both knew he was sure to involve himself one way or another, he wouldn’t be able to help himself.

Like that?” There’s a pause over the word someone, like she knows who to place her bets on but doesn’t want to say his name out loud. The sound of it might shatter Percy. Percy has told her about him, knows vaguely of his no-longer existence. Knows what Percy’s mother did in retaliation. The irony of using Medusa’s head to be rid of him is not lost on Percy now that he’s older and understands.
No wonder his mother was always adamant that Medusa was the victim, not the monster, of her own story.

Again, in hindsight, he probably shouldn’t have tried to block a gods-damned spear with his bare hands. Because, surprisingly, the spear would, like, 99.9% pierce through his armor and then his very vulnerable skin into his equally vulnerable flesh if he tried to do that. So, yeah. Definitely the stupidest one on the long list of Stupid Things Percy Had Ever Done.
But then again, at least it didn’t run through his girlfriend, which should really be considered a win.Or: Percy lets his fatal flaw get the best of him again. Annabeth is not thrilled.
