“But that doesn’t matter anymore. I guess we both know what it’s like when the curtain falls too soon,” Blitzø added with a genuine smile that softened his uneven face. Stolas stepped closer, stopping at his side without touching him.
“Then… what’s left for us afterward?” he asked. Blitzø tilted his head.
“Enjoy the show. Even if it’s a lie. Even if it only lasts for a little while.”Since he was little, he had pretended to live in a fantasy, one where someone would come and rescue him from his cage, finally setting him free.That was better than nothing, wasn’t it?
But as he watched the imp swing over the balcony railing and vanish behind the wall, Stolas felt something sinking in his stomach like a clawed weight.

“Blitzø.”
All of his senses were tuned in on Stolas as he heard that soft tone, so familiar from the past yet so strange right now, thanks to the latest emotional turmoil Stolas had gone through.
“Yeah?”
“Your home is… very warm. I don’t believe I’ve ever felt anything as warm as this when surrounded by so many people.”
It was the first time Stolas had commented on his home without various words of apology or gratitude. He wasn’t asking for forgiveness for being a burden or saying thank you in that guilty, tired tone. It seemed like for the first time he was simply… enjoying, to be there with Blitzø and his crazy family.
The big boy steps Blitzø and Stolas take as they nagivate their way through their shared life.
