Her ears are ringing when they pull her away. Joel took the brunt force of the flash bang, swinging her around like she weighed nothing to curl around her, but she’s just the slightest bit wobbly when they try to take her away from him, still on the ground.
Doesn’t stop her from screaming for him, though.
Even half out of it, Joel always answers when she calls, and she sees him trying to stagger onto his knees, calling back for her.
Then a soldier hits him on the back of the head.
And Ellie sees fucking red.

“It’s an emergency placement,” Ponyboy pointed out, barely holding himself back from rolling his eyes.
“Yes - well, even so,” Laura continued. “Listen - call me if you do have any trouble, okay? I mean it, kiddo. Just… I’m in your corner, remember?”
Ponyboy just shrugged, finding it hard to believe after all these many years of Laura complaining about his short-lived placements. If anything, it worried him more that he was being given this reminder - she didn’t normally tell him to call her if anything was the matter. Did she know something about the Curtis brothers that Pony ought to be privy to? Or had she also made the connection between Darrel’s imposing stature and Pony’s track record with attracting less-than-friendly placements?
