Summary
Light is filtering in from the exterior corridor and it’s illuminating a path between her and, below her, Conrad. He looks like he’s sleeping, turned on his side and using his arm as a pillow, but Belly watches the rise and fall of his chest. It’s something she’s made a habit of, every time they’ve been able to see each other, be together, and she knows the pattern of his breathing when he’s sleeping. It’s not what she’s seeing right now.

Eddie feels like his heart is going to beat out of his chest.
There’s a guy, in full turnout gear, hanging from a ladder truck. And it isn’t night time, it’s not raining– Buck is right next to him, breathing– but Eddie still feels like he’s right back to two years ago. Right back to seeing Buck lifelessly hanging from the ladder.
He’s going to throw up.

Eddie thinks about it for a moment, because honestly, it’s not something he’s ever really considered. Which seems crazy, considering his previously-assumed-straight best friend came out to him in the last year.
“I’ve never really thought about it,” Eddie admits. “I mean, I’ll check out a hot guy’s ass now and then, but that’s normal.”
Buck chokes.
“It’s not ab-normal,” Buck manages to get out. “Or so I hear.”

Eddie can feel Buck’s head shaking in the crook of his neck, can feel his hands grasping even tighter in his shirt. Eddie doesn’t know what to do for him - he doesn’t know how he could even begin to make this better. This devastation has been silently festering inside of Buck, and now it’s all pouring out in one heartbreaking confession.
Eddie can feel him take a large, gasping breath. And suddenly he knows what Buck is about to say before the words even leave his mouth:

He must’ve said it out loud, because Buck stifles an ugly gasp into the receiver, all tinny and aching. “B-Bobby,” he croaks, chokes out as if speaking pains him.
