She steels herself. Opens the door to the backseat. Blinks. There are blue eyes staring back at her. They’re watery, as if Daisy has been crying, and Basira can immediately tell that she’s been shot. Daisy’s pale fingers are pressed to her side, digging into the open wound exposed on her abdomen, and her entire body is shaking slightly as though she’s been shocked. Neither one of them says anything for a moment, Basira trying to puzzle out a solution to the problem in her car while Daisy’s eyes flicker across her ex-wife’s face.

Basira Hussain does not make promises. She learned very early in her career that promises lead to weakness, and owing any part of herself to someone makes her skin crawl. She scoffs at her coworkers, who throw around the word like it has no attached weight, no metaphorical ball and chain, and she winces at children, who have no sense yet of the disappointment that comes from a broken promise.
