This is the first girl who’s ever asked Mike out — something he had, in the not too distant past, been terrified would never happen. And Mike just stands there, feeling like his dining hall dinner is about to crawl back up his esophagus.
Jeremy, Saint Jeremy, nudges him with an elbow. “He’s kind of private about it, but Mike actually has someone back home.”
Mike turns his head to look at Jeremy, expecting a knowing smile or the hint of a wink. But Jeremy actually looks sincere, which makes Mike’s eyebrows sink down, almost to the top of his nose.
“Will, right?” Jeremy supplies, forever trying to be helpful. “He’s at CalArts?”

“W-what if it’s not him?” Will croaks. Once again, Mike’s face just falls, and Will shakes his head slightly, tears welling in his eyes. “What if… what if this is all just in… in my head? A-and that’s… that’s why El can’t find him? What if… I’m just making all this up?”
For a few moments, Mike is just quiet. He looks like he’s trying to figure out what to say, so Will takes another shuddered breath. “I-I feel like I’m going insane, Mike,” he admits, hating the way his voice cracks. “It’s like… like I don’t… have control of my own mind anymore… I-I just feel like I’m… like I’m going crazy.”

Summary
“Guys, Mike’s not like me, he just can’t name characters.” They both give him a pointed look, clearly not believing a word. “I’m serious, every character is a reference to someone we know.”
“Are they now?” Dustin raises an eyebrow at him.
“Yes!” Will is perhaps a bit exasperated, “Stephen and Jay are clearly Steve and Robin, and James is Hopper,” at the blank look they give him, he clarifies, “his first name is Jim.”
This somehow only makes Lucas seem more unimpressed, “okay, but you do see how that’s more suspicious right?”
“What? That Mike can’t come up with names?”
“No,” Lucas shakes his head and clasps Will in the shoulder, “that the first name Mike thought to cannibalize when coming up with a boyfriend for you was his own”.The party grows closer after Will moves in with the Wheelers, picking up D&D again. It all goes well until Mike introduces a new character, Sir. Gabriel Whepler, whose sole purpose seems to be flirting with Will.

A punched out breath escaped Will. "I didn't think you would ever bring it up, honestly. For the longest time, I wasn't even sure you knew."
"I didn't. I just never- I don't understand.. why me? After everything that happened, why would it be me?" Mike felt like he was being wheeled into surgery, laid bare on the table for everyone to see the mess that was his heart.
"What? Mike, how could it not be you?" Will let out a disbelieving laugh. "Mike, it was always you. It had always been you back then."
Back then. Late again.
"But not anymore?"
Mike Wheeler gets drunk and confessions ensue.
