“You’re not guiding me, though, are you?” She was increasingly feeling like she was in the deep end of a pool, exhausted from treading water. “I want your opinion, Dr. Abbot, and, as my attending, you should offer it.”

He crossed his arms across his chest, rolled his eyes, and then stared her down. “Forgive me for thinking you know what’s best for you.”

a.k.a. It's finally the end of her Fourth of July shift, and Dr. Samira Mohan doesn't know what she wants.

“He ran.” Samira says eventually, leaning her head back against the lockers. Her voice is small in a way that she thought she’d outgrown, unlearned somewhere between the start of her residency and the realisation that it doesn’t actually matter what Robby thinks. It’s all she can do to keep the tears out of her voice; cannot bring herself to pretend that everything is going to be alright, “I told him I was pregnant, and he ran.”

    Day 1: First Times

    First 'I love you's.

His eyes are heavy-lidded, mouth still slick from their kiss when he says, "God, I love you."

    The bubble bursts.

    “What?” she breathes.

Nice, pretty, well-adjusted girls—girls who are ready for a relationship—don’t sprint out of the room when someone says I love you. They smile softly, kiss them back, maybe tear up a little (a cute, appropriate, romcom-acceptable amount), and say I love you, too. They certainly do not flee wearing nothing but said person’s boxers like some kind of emotionally stunted bandit that only hits in the morning hours.

Samira is decidedly not a nice, normal girl. She is a panicked, malfunctioning fire alarm of a human being whose brain short‑circuits at the mere suggestion of emotional vulnerability. A girl who hears I love you and responds with the fight‑or‑flight instincts of a cornered raccoon.

If she wasn’t already committed to sitting on the panel, she wouldn’t be here. If the panel didn’t come with an outrageous speaking fee, large enough to cover the rest of her attorneys’ fees for what has become an acrimonious divorce, she would have considered backing out. If the panel wasn’t booked by her agent, wasn’t a part of the press plan for her upcoming book, she probably would have backed out. But instead, Samira is here in Miami, Florida, preparing to sit on a panel at the largest emergency medicine conference of the year, and discuss race and racism in medicine in front of a room of a thousand people.

Jack Abbot has two rules as a widower.

    1. He will not enter into a sexual relationship or have sexual relations with anyone who works at PTMC.
    2. No falling in love.

Tinder is convenient, in that respect. Until it's not.
