    And here I was, holding my stupid ringing phone, staring into the name on the screen.

    My heart raced as the phone continued to ring. I debated whether to answer it or just let it go to voicemail like I had been doing. But something inside me compelled me to pick up this time. It wasn’t Jessy like usual. It was Jake. He hasn’t called me ever. Except that one time, when I didn’t know him yet.

    With trembling hands, I swiped my finger across the screen and answered the call.

    “Hello?”

    The now 3-month-old, Chenyu, had seemed to have picked up his mother's dark green forest hair along with her stubbornness, and his father's obsidian eyes along with his puppy-liky tactics.

    Jinshi bounced gently on his feet, one hand holding the tiny body to his chest, the other rubbing gentle circles on their back. 

    The kitchen was dark, except for the fridge light spilling pale blue across the floor, as Jinshi paced, rocking the baby in his arms- He whispered, voice soft and strained-" Shh... shh, sweetheart. I know. I know... it's okay..."
