The sun is definitely shining bright through the curtains by the time Patrick rolls out of bed. But it’s before noon at least, and McDonald’s is probably still serving breakfast, so Patrick counts it as a win.

“But he never-” Pete stops, trailing off into the empty possibility, the thousand different ways that sentence could end. Patrick never said anything, he never seemed to mind, Pete could never really tell if he noticed or not and would have pulled his still-beating heart out of his own chest and offered it up on a platter if he ever thought it would make any difference, but it never seemed like it would, so he let the words sneak into songs and hang in the open air for 20-something years, and thought they’d dissipated by now.
“Yeah,” Joe says softly. “I really - thought maybe you guys talked about it or something, but then I realized you didn’t, and I just kind of - I don’t think it’s gonna be the end of the world, you know?"
What if Pete spent the last 20-something years really truly head over heels in love with Patrick, and Patrick was so genuinely oblivious he had no idea? Then - what if he found out? An exploration of not actually unrequited love that just spends a really long time seeming unrequited, because Patrick needs some time to wrap his head around it, basically.

It’s not until much later that night, when Gabe is lying in his bunk, trying to get at least a few hours of sleep (and failing impressively), that he thinks back to what the fuck had happened that morning. It wasn’t just the blowjob, though that had been good, and it wasn’t really the pain (the time Mike got back to the bus early, startled them, and William kneed Gabe in the nose looms large in his mind). Maybe it was just—William’s hands in his hair, pulling him back, moving him. Like William knew what was best for him, and he didn’t have to think, didn’t have to make any decisions, just had to follow William’s lead and take what William gave him.
Gabe swallows.
Yeah, that’s it. Now, he just has to figure out how to get William to do it again.

Summary
Someone at American Airlines must have it out for Gabe, because his flight back to Los Angeles is delayed, too—an hour and a half for the storm frosting over LaGuardia’s expansive windows, another hour for some kind of technical issue with the plane, and then thirty minutes for the flight crew to change out, because all of the delays mean they’re at the end of their shifts, or something—Gabe wasn’t really paying attention. By the time they’ve clocked an additional hour sitting on the runway, Gabe resigns himself to the re-imagining of his homecoming, specifically with a lot less exuberant reunion sex and a lot more sleeping. He shoots William a text not to wait up, receives the answering colon-open parenthesis, and turns his phone on airplane mode, tipping his head back against the seat and closing his eyes.

They take an Uber back from Avalon, more out of caution than necessity—Emo Nite was fun, but not half as crazy as the parties Gabe used to find on tour, most of which were coaxed to life in his own nurturing hands, most of which took place on other people’s busses. The point is, they’re older now, with shittier metabolisms and significantly less to prove, and—crucially—more room in their budgets for frivolous expenses. Besides, this way Gabe can stretch his legs out beneath the pushed-up passenger seat, tuck William against his side, curl his fingers around the warm stretch of skin beneath the hem of William’s shirt. William makes these little warning noises whenever Gabe’s fingertips wander too close to the waistband of his jeans, it’s fucking adorable.

Gee sat beside her with her parasol, providing Frankie with its shade in the glaring summer sun, and consoled a complete stranger who felt safe enough in their presence to open up about every pressing issue involving money. That's where their arrangement began.
