"Kara," Lena frowns. "It's like six seconds of licking my neck, it's not the end of the world."
'But i'm a vampire', Kara wants to say out loud, except that gives them a bad reputation. Really, she should say, 'but i'm in love with you. i've loved you all along and Jesus christ this is pushing me over the edge', but she can't get those words to formulate for some reason, so she goes with, "I just don’t think it's the best idea."

She pulls the quilt down from the top shelf of Maura's linen closet where she knows she never goes. It's still wrapped up in the plastic bag she'd thrown it in a year and a half ago, six little squares of fabric sewn together, and a whole mess of batting, the only worthwhile thing she ever got out of high school Home Ec. She runs the little blue pieces between her fingers. It still makes her chest ache, but not in the sharp way it did the night Maura miscarried, when she had shoved them up there in the first place. It's dull, quiet, now. She debates starting over. Scrapping what she had made for Small Tiny completely, throwing it in the dumpster or burying it in the yard and not having to look at it again. But she can't. So she adds instead. Four little green squares, stitched on small and careful, like his hard-earned choppy syllables. Green-Eggs-An’-Ham.

“I miss you too, darling.“ Lena answers right away, accent thicker than usual despite the fact she’s been back in Ireland for so little time. “Just two more days until I’m back home.”
Kara presses the phone closer to her ear, closing her eyes and concentrating until she can hear the steady rhythm of Lena’s heartbeat. She sighs for what feels like the thousandth time since her girlfriend has been gone, never mind the fact it’s only the fifth day of their week long separation - her heart aches as if they’ve been apart for months.
