Summary
Stone is trapped in a moment, unable to move forward or back. He knows it's bad, but doesn't know how to move on. The past keeps reminding him of what he has lost. That is until a black and red hedgehog is thrust into his life, causing a chain of events for his future he never could have seen.
Whether he was ready or not for this remained to be seen, but there was one thing for sure- the Doctor only hired the best, and Stone would not let himself falter now.

Sonic jumped back and yelped in surprise as he looked behind him and saw Shadow, alive but worse for wear, leaning against one of the trees back in the forest where Sonic had come from, and after seeing him, his jaw dropped and eyes widened staring at the other supposed dead hedgehog
Sonic couldn’t see him very well, but from what he could see, Shadow looked terrible, but as Sonic got closer to him it all became clearer.
Shadow looked awful.
TLDR:
Reorganizing the End Credits scenes to have Sonic’s run result in finding Shadow instead of Amy, with a touch of hurt/comfort and protective Sonic!Bookmarked by PrettyPenne

It isn’t until Dr. Robotnik’s alarming return that he finds himself thrown into the past within a military base where Shadow and Maria resided.
Escaping wasn’t an option—especially not after he had his memories taken upon his arrival.

“Why are you leaving?” Shadow desperately asked.
Sonic couldn’t even return his gaze. “You… wouldn’t understand. I have to return before—“
“Before what?” It sounded like a beg, a plea even. “You’re the first one I’ve seen that looks like me. First you can’t tell me your name, and now you can’t even look at me?”
The last words stung far more than the blue hedgehog ever would’ve liked. “I…I’m sorry.”
