Shadow and Sonic have a fight in which Sonic ends up saying something he can’t take back but then while the group were fighting Eggman in one of his bases it explodes and ends with Shadow getting severely hurt and put into a coma while he’s in the coma he dreams of travelling to different worlds and seeing different versions of himself and Sonic all of whom are in love and Sonic is stuck waiting in the real world for Shadow to wake up
During their time apart they are reminded of why they fell in love in the first place

Katherine woke up with a jolt.
Not because she was woken up by Abaddon putting coins into her mouth, nor by two ghosts phasing into her room arguing over one thing or another, nor by Nathan's presence, staring at her like an owl.
No, she woke up because it was quiet. Which obviously worried her, the hotel was never quiet.

Summary
To the family, Abaddon was always the demon in a little boy's body. Responded to "he" and "him" pronouns, all of it. So when he blew up at being misgendered in town, it sparked a few questions. There was no questions about Abaddon's gender to begin with, hell, when he explained the way he was strapped to the vessel, it was implied he was attached to a little boy.
Or
Abaddon possesses a little girl but presents himself as a boy to deal with misogyny in the past centuries and decades he's lived through.
