It was the fourth funeral that week.
Steve approached Max while Robin scouted a spot to settle.
“Max,” he called softly, keeping his voice low out of respect.
The girl raised her head. Her eyes were red and bloodshot, her nose dripping. She wiped at it with her sleeve as Steve came to a halt beside her. “Hey,” she mustered up, trying for a small smile.
Steve smiled back politely, not having the energy for much more than that. “How’re you holding up?” He asked even though he already knew. Outside of her general appearance right then, he’d been hearing a lot about her withdrawal from her friends over the last couple of days. Lucas especially had been worried.
Nonetheless, Max shrugged. “You know,” she offered instead of her expected bluntness. “You?”
Steve lifted a shoulder in an attempt at a shrug, unsure how else to put it; he hadn’t known Billy after all. Max nodded as though she understood.

Steve nodded, his hands crossed and eyeing the kid.
“Right.” The kid nodded back slower. “How did you know? That you liked both?”
Sighing, Steve thought, would probably give off the impression that Steve was disinterested or irritated with the kid’s dilemma here, which wasn’t necessarily true, but the urge to do so boiled up so strongly. Instead though, he shrugged, slouching on the counter that separated the two of them. “I didn’t. For most of my life, I just thought staring at guys in locker rooms or on the basketball field or on TV was things that all guys do and just don’t talk about. Which is, by the way, not true.”

The fall of ‘84 changed things for Susan Hargrove. She learned of her husband’s horrible ways and she was mortified.
Billy had arrived home that night with a bruise lining his jaw, dazed and the Chief of Police in tow – all without Max. Needless to say, Neil had not been happy. The moment Neil was sure there were no prying ears, he turned on Billy.
And punched his son without a blink.
Susan had gasped, caught off guard, while Billy just inhaled sharply.
“Sweatheart,” Neil chided, “Me and Billy are going to have a quick talk. Why don’t you get dinner sorted in the meantime?”
Feeling sick to her stomach she’d left.
Susan had made a decision that night. She had to get out, and she couldn’t go alone.

The table goes quiet.
“Yes, Carol,” Heather says flatly. “What do you want?”
Carol chews her gum, blatantly eyeing him up and down. “So you’re like, the Malibu Barbie Tommy won’t shut up about?”
He blinks. “Huh?”
She jerks a thumb over her shoulder. Sure enough—Hagan, at the jock table, failing miserably to hide the puppy eyes he’s sending over.
“My boyfriend misses you,” she smirks.
She plops into the empty seat across from him, right beside Heather. The cheer captain scowls. Carol beckons Tommy over, and he comes like a fucking dog to heel.
Ugh.
OR: Harringrove, but Billy has to struggle with the mundane day-to-day, high school social hierarchy and shitty dad. All while trying not to fall for those soft brown eyes from across the lunch hall.
