It’s a relatively straightforward job: Jesper will pretend to be the handmaid to the withdrawn and sheltered Van Eck heir, and convince him to elope with another mercher. That’s all Jesper has to do on his end, and then the Crows will walk away with 45 million kruge. It’s a simple task.
Or it would be, if not for the fact that there seems to be more to Wylan Van Eck than meets the eye, and Jesper can’t help but be intrigued—and maybe a bit charmed, too.

Wylan flushes fully. I don’t have a crush on Jesper anymore, he reminds himself. There’s no reason to feel so hopeful by those words.
So Wylan scoffs, and asks, “What, for practice?”
Jesper looks away, and casual as ever, shrugs. He faces Wylan again with a grin. “Yeah. Yeah, I mean, why not?”

Wylan’s romantic life is in shambles; every date he goes on is somehow always disastrous. Maybe it was doomed from the start, since he’s only going on these dates to get over his equally-doomed crush on his best friend, Jesper, in the first place. “What business, Kaz?” He ignored the unasked question, mostly because he knew Kaz would bring it up anyways. Kaz turned the vial in his hand, as if hoping it would get Wylan to crack.
When it didn’t, Kaz stopped moving the vial around and spoke up. “What is it?” The tone in his voice was unreadable, like it always was. Wylan took a cautious step forward.
“Not a chemical, so you don’t need to worry about it.” He mentally cursed himself, knowing Kaz would question his defensiveness.

Wylan knew all too well how to play with fire—as a chemist, as a tanner’s apprentice, as his father’s son, he had to be familiar with it—but this was a new kind of risk, leaving his heart exposed on the damp cobblestones to be stomped on. It was idiotic, he knew, to intentionally let himself be wounded in the Barrel. Things tended to get infected here, and people preyed on weakness like sharks.
But he had been alone, been lonely, for so many years, long before he’d emerged from a freezing canal and found himself at the bottom of the Barrel. He needed this, and even if it was going to burn him, even if it was a poorly constructed bomb just waiting to implode, Wylan found that he didn’t much care.
At least he’d have been warm and wanted for one night in his miserable, saintsforsaken life.
