If Hinata was ugly, or if he didn’t text Kageyama all the time, or if he was anyone else, then none of this would even be happening. Kageyama would’ve been able to squash whatever childish crush he’d developed, and he wouldn’t be sitting here spending hours thinking about someone who’s halfway across the world.

These two years together, this time spent living together in this dorm, this hard-won friendship – it all sort of felt like an interlude, like Kageyama was in a transition period, like he was finally moving onto the next stage after this weird limbo, a non-space that was growing more tense with each wasted day. It all sort of felt like Hinata would wake up one morning and Kageyama would be standing there, muttering something about moving out, something about his not-girlfriend, something about their friendship coming to an end. It all felt like Hinata had spent the past two years in his own movie, fulfilled, happy, and Kageyama had just been paused on a title card.
Like an interlude. Like Kageyama was about to press play.

To the studio’s collective relief, Salvage premiered to excellent reviews. There was always the lingering terror that, regardless of all of their hard work and playtesting, that the game would bomb, flop, and destroy all of their young careers. Which was why Kei was half-heartedly writing out potential ideas for a next game with his earbuds on, listening to a playlist of video game soundtracks. His day was going well, and normal, and Sakusa only glared at Bokuto like he wanted to strangle him with his load-bearing jpeg three times, when a notification in his YouTube account made him tab over.

“I’m sorry.” Tsukishima found himself saying. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

Summary
Tobio braced himself and stood, gathering Hinata’s warm body close. Hinata’s weight settled against him, strengthening the impression he always had at these times: that he was collecting a part of himself, severed by some weird circumstance. In these moments he couldn’t help feeling that Hinata belonged to him, and as long as he didn’t talk about the impression out loud it harmed no one. As it was Hinata mumbled a little, curling into him the way he’d anticipated.
Without a word he carried Hinata to Hinata’s cluttered bedroom and laid him in bed, wrestling blankets out from under him to cover him with. Hinata woke, then, a little, but only to blink at him sleepily and mumble something that sounded like thanks. He turned away, and Tobio returned to his own bedroom, turning off all the lights on the way. That restlessness from earlier threatened to rise up and strangle him.
Living with Hinata was nice—but only most of the time. Only when he didn’t feel like this.
