Hungry for companionship, Kim found an equally as lonely homo-sexual by the name of Thomas, living not too far from his humble little apartment in the GRIH. He too had a steady job, better paying than Kim’s, working not with the great big machines of the harbour that Kim held such fascination for but in coordinating hours and shipments. He liked Kim, but not too much, and never demanded what he couldn’t give. He had no eccentricities, no strange hobbies, and was perfectly acceptable company to discuss radio programs with, to introduce friends to with his sharp suit and perfectly honed small-talk, and occasionally went with Kim for dinner in which he reliably ordered steak and potatoes without horseradish. In short, he was perfect.
Two years later, Kim stood in the entryway of hostel in a miserable little town and watched in horrified fascination as a man in mustard-yellow trousers and the most hideous tie he’s ever seen staggered down the stairs, smelling of piss and spirits, and declared himself Raphael Ambrosius Costeau.After giving up on true love, Kim finds it again in an unlikely place -- all he has to do is let it in.

An officer of the RCM continues his self-immolation with cheap spirits while blaring disco music, thrashing apart his room in a fit of rage. He grabs his green snakeskin shoe and hurls it through the window, a primal need satisfied with the sharp crack of breaking glass. The cold night air rushes through the hole in the window, fluttering his sweat-damp clothes.
"I don't want to be this kind of animal anymore!" He howls at the wind like it will hear and understand him. He sobs and screams into the night, haunted by a torment he can't name, only run from.
He blacks out soon after, clutching a bottle of Commodore Red to his chest.

It takes you longer than you would like to admit to realise that it always relates to him. When he has a good day, your dreams are steeped in gold. When he flirts along the edges of relapse, the light isn’t quite there, like a faltering lightbulb on the brink of burning out. He stumbles in the waking hours and you stumble in the dark.
Little by little he is becoming something in your rote routine, breaking it apart in a way you aren’t quite prepared for. You’re frustrated by it, by how quickly he had such a hold on you. You’ve never needed another soul in your life.
