“Boy!” Vernon’s voice snapped Harry out of his thoughts. He looked up to see his uncle glaring at him. “Are you even listening?”
“Yes, Uncle Vernon,” Harry muttered, quickly averting his eyes.
Vernon grunted, satisfied, and turned back to his meal. But Harry kept sneaking glances at Petunia, her silence speaking louder than any of Vernon’s rants ever could.
For the first time, Harry wondered if she was trapped too.
When the wards fail after an incident, Harry is cast out of the Dursleys and into the reluctant care of Professor Snape. Silent and spiraling, Harry discovers an unsettling power within him. something felt so, so incredibly wrong, about the fact that there was currently... something, a fragment, a piece, a soul, terrifying as the implication was, something, tied to his mind, more worrying that it apparently belonged to the man who took everything from him, burned his once-home to the ground and had caused him so much pain.
what's more worrying still was that this version, splinter, whatever it was, was so distantly detached from the cruel and downright mad nature of the one who was supposed to be real.
that the one in his dreams was all gentle voice, weirdly analytical composure, thoughtful and contemplative and unbelievably unlike the general he had worshipped from afar, unlike the fallen angel who haunted his every step.
the one in his dreams was all too... soft.
and, unfortunately for him, it was even more unsettling with how aware the other was of his own softness, and was just as confused as him.

Summary
Cloud opened his eyes, the smell of food strong in his nose. He vaguely recalled Tifa telling him that she was out with Yuffie this morning to get some fresh air and out of Edge. After the incident with Sephiroth and Geostigma, people slowly but surely went back to their daily struggles. He was the same. After a particularly tiring delivery day, Cloud had called it a day and went to sleep with a headache.
“Cloud, wake up! The mayor told everybody to assemble after breakfast, so don’t fall asleep again”, a familiar female voice and the sound of plates in the sink muffled through the door.
Groggy and with a tired sigh, Cloud heaved himself out of bed, reaching for the door.
He felt heavier as usual, a remnant of the Geostigma? More importantly,
“Just what does Domino want? I told Reeve to handle him for a while-”“Reeve? Cloud, are you still asleep?”
Blond hair, tied into a ponytail and the same blue eyes as his stared at him amused.
“Mom?”

Or Cloud wakes up as his younger self, suspecting Sephiroth behind it.

When Cloud finds Sephiroth alive but unconscious in a dark and grimy alleyway in Wall Market, appearing to be free of Jenova’s influence, he has to ask himself if the creature that crawled out of the crater and ashes of her impact could still be called a man, or if all that’s left is just a monster.
Or: Sephiroth teams up with Avalanche to take down Shinra. Cloud becomes his keeper, for better or for worse.
