It wasn't dementia either. She knew because Ma-\___^]*-ax?ine{/;* her friend's grandpa had it and her issues weren't anything like his.
Chloe cleared the search bar and, reluctantly, typed 'schizophrenia symptoms'.
When they pulled up at a stop sign, the entity next to her tapped her nails on the steering wheel and peered over at Chloe's phone.
"Look up if hallucinations can drive your truck for you."
Max probably had a point, but Chloe was doing her best to ignore that fact for now.

After Rachel betrays her trust, Chloe is done with Arcadia Bay for good. She leaves mom a note and sets off for L.A. by herself.
During the drive, she keeps running into Max. A girl present in nearly every childhood memory Chloe has. A girl who Chloe has no memory of.

Where it had all begun, where it all should have ended differently.
