Summary
Zoey Choi and Kang Mira, students of Marine Biology and Marine Archaeology, respectively, earn the opportunity of a lifetime as interns for an expedition to Jeju Island. But a diving accident puts the girls face-to-face with a living, breathing fiction that shakes their realities: a mermaid. After a rabies exposure, the virus must travel to the brain before it can cause symptoms. Therefore, the incubation period may last for weeks to months depending on several factors such as location of the exposure site (in relation to the brain) and age; in extremely rare cases it could be dormant for years.
Rumi thinks about this one frequently, lying in bed at night; the idea that you could be wasting away at any moment in your life. A poison in your veins with you none the wiser– like a ticking bomb just waiting to go off.
You would need to get bit or scratched first, of course, and if you took the right precautions you would likely never know. And Rumi has never been bitten anyway. She’s fine.

Mira looked up to see his face— "Oh!" For the second time tonight, Mira was startled to see a young woman's face. The demon king wasn't a king at all. She was a demon queen. Her eyes were a soft brown, though when she stepped into the light, they reflected with a golden hue. The tiger striped patterns were on her face and neck too. She wasn't human, that was for certain.
But she didn't seem dangerous either.

Zoey finally speaks numbly, eyes staring a million miles away. "She thinks we're leaving her here. She thinks we'd do that to her."
Mira face turns deathly pale and her eyes widen.
"Why would you think-?"
"Oh, why wouldn't she, Mira?!" Zoey snaps, a nasty edge to her voice.
The silence that follows last a solid minute before Mira takes a deep breath and pulls the cooler and three suitcases out of the trunk.
"We are all staying here until we sort ourselves out. and then we are ALL returning to the penthouse, hopefully able to look one another in the eye again. Got it!? Great. Now, considering neither of you can drive, I suggest we go inside. Now."
Chapter 2 got Angsty. I'm not sorry.
