Summary
It's MCD but it’s OK! This fic deals with the grief of losing a romantic partner, though in a “timely” fashion. Please read at your level of comfort. The ending leaves everyone in a good place.
This is a fic-of-a-fic of the wonderful Sunlight In The Midnight by the inimitable bktrashcat. It imagines that Ed and Stede enjoyed a 15-year relationship together, happily, before Stede passes of natural causes. This picks up just after Stede’s passing.
It is also an AU of The Repair Shop (https://www.youtube.com/c/therepairshop), a lovely show that I highly recommend.
It’s not necessary to have read the fic or seen the show to enjoy this, but having read the fic will help.
Fic info: Ed and Stede slowly start a relationship. There is a 35-year age gap between them; Stede is older. He is somewhat estranged from his daughter Alma, though they’re working on it. Alma’s son, whom Stede meets at 18, is Monty. They live in/near New York City. This will be canon-divergent from Chapter 16 on.
Show info: The Repair Shop is set in England, but I moved it to upstate New York for this fic. On the show, experts repair antiques and heirlooms for people.

Summary
As a child, Alma loved drawing and painting and expressing herself, and her favorite medium was always nail art. When she was in her teens, she painted the nails of all of her mother’s friends -- it was a special way for her and her mother to bond, and to cope with her father’s absence. So she was surprised when, after a reconciliation, her dad asked her to paint his nails. She was even more surprised to watch him become a part of the crew of her nail salon business, A Polished Affair. But her biggest surprise came when, after a little extracurricular planning by her friend and coworker Lucius, he met her best customer, Ed Teach. She and Lucius watch with great interest as Ed and Stede grow closer and closer with each weekly appointment, and with each painted nail. But when Alma gets a middle-of-the-night text from Ed that something has happened and her dad has run off, she goes from intrigued to worried, and from observer to participant in their odd relationship dance. It’s left to her and Lucius to bring these obvious two soulmates back together. As she does so, she learns about her dad, and about what it means to find yourself over and over again.

Stede's life is boring, flat, made up of things he didn't choose for himself. He commissions some glass art from Ed as an anniversary gift for Mary, and Stede starts to learn what it is like to want things for himself.
