It’s less cohesive than the innards of a pig. That’s the problem with memory bound by emotion. Love is diffuse. Glinda had an answer. The correct one. The answer she'd practiced: it was a contract. A political strategy. Mutually beneficial. Mutually cold.
But that wasn’t the one she gave. Instead, she took a slow sip from her glass, careful, deliberate. The edge of the crystal pressed against her lower lip like a kiss that never landed.
And Elphaba noticed it now, really noticed it. There was no wedding ring. Glinda’s left hand rested plainly beside her glass, bare. Empty.
It was intentional. On purpose. She had taken it off before tea. And now Elphaba’s throat tightened, as if the realization was something she’d swallowed wrong.
Glinda set her cup down softly. “It has its perks,” she said, voice velvet-smooth. “If I weren’t married to him, I doubt I’d be sitting here, drinking tea with you.”

But that doesn’t mean she wants her…Elphaba to notice and feel sorry for her. As if she didn’t give in to peer pressure to be sitting in this circle too!
Galinda sends a defiant smile in her direction and takes her spin.
The whole room seems to hold its breath. Suddenly there’s a crackle of more than just drunk and horny tension in the air—a subtle feeling no one else seems to notice, but Galinda recognizes instantly as the bottle seems to wobble a little unnaturally in its rotations and then come to a harsh stop. Galinda’s eyes find Elphaba’s wide ones across the circle.

Elphie has just got back some minutes ago, and is for some reason distraught. She hangs her jacket on the coat rack absentmindedly, stopping at the centre of their room. There is a cloud of emotion hanging over her head, and Galinda suddenly realises that she is out of time.
"You can't just demand secrets, Elphie," Galinda chides her, doing an admirable job of hiding the fact that her heart sits in her throat. The world buzzes at the edges of her vision. "You know how the game works."
"Alright," Elphie stands in the middle of the room, arms folded on her chest. Galinda averts her eyes from how this pose highlights Elphie's biceps. "Alright." She turns to Galinda. "My secret is that I think Fiyero is not good for you."

Elphaba looks down at the blonde’s dirty ankles, the ends of her dress ripped through shreds, practically ruined.
“No one deemed civilized would ever step a foot in the forest alone.”
“Civilized?” the blonde woman squeaks. “Surely you are not talking to me about civility.”

Elphaba ends up being turned away as a child and raised by Dulcibear—growing up tucked in the forest, and embracing her magic. Her days are peaceful and unchanging, a domestic bliss.
That is until she encounters Galinda—who has travelled quite a treacherous path to find her.(Or, even in an AU! Elphaba and Galinda are insufferable and obsessed with each other.)
