    Summary

Caught up in these thoughts, with the System breathing down his neck, Shen Qingqiu does not properly assess the situation as he should.

Perhaps the biggest mistake Shen Qingqiu makes in this moment is not his confidence in Luo Binghe’s abilities nor the potential ripple effects of the changed situation surrounding his broken seal: it’s that he doesn’t think to be cautious of Luo Binghe.

Shen Qingqiu, in his years in this role, has never harmed Luo Binghe. He hasn’t betrayed Luo Binghe yet. Shen Qingqiu has become far too accustomed to their easy, fond companionship. He forgets, in this moment, the way qi balance shifting wildly out of equilibrium can make people behave in unexpected, unpredictable, often violent ways.

    Even toward those they love.

or: Shen Qingqiu makes a potentially catastrophic error at the Immortal Alliance Conference. One that changes everything...yet not what Shen Qingqiu cares about most.

Luo Binghe's efforts to pinpoint and travel to the 'nice' Shen Qingqiu's soul don't go according to plan, which is a slightly nicer way of saying that they fail miserably and only end up spitting him out in front of some unimpressive, irritating flower spirit that he'd apparently married a decade ago and promptly forgotten about. Oops.

Even worse, Luo Binghe is struck by a curse that forces him to share a telepathic bond with this little spirit until they learn how to get along. Double oops.

...Actually, doesn't this 'Shen Yuan' seem a bit familiar...?

    Summary

The sight of the blade, emerging from Jiang Cheng’s chest, just under his heart, was something Wei Wuxian would relive in a thousand nightmares. “Go,” Jiang Cheng rasped, blood already welling at the corners of his mouth. For a long moment, Wei Wuxian simply couldn’t move, despite his thrumming panic and the shouts, the noise emanating from the rest of the Wen soldiers, coming hot on the heels of the one who’d just killed his brother.

It wasn't conscious thought that brought the borrowed sword around and stabbed his brother’s murderer through the eye; only instinct, only rage.

Jiang Cheng didn’t even make a sound as he fell, the Wen soldier’s sword still piercing his chest, as the one who’d wielded it also fell, dead. “Jiang Cheng, Jiang Cheng,” Wei Wuxian chanted through numb lips, stooping over him, touching his slack and bloodless face. He couldn’t feel anything. “No, no, no, no—”

    Summary

He sat upright and clenched his hands, numb from the cold. They felt as real as anything did these days.

Wei Wuxian remembered 'yesterday' with relative certainty. They had planned an attack, Lan Wangji never leaving his side, spitfire eyes glaring and turning away in the end. Him, alone, coming down on the Wen's flank like a wraith. The stench of freshly raised corpses and the shrill sound of his own flute bleeding into the rush of blades and arrows piercing the clear air turned rancid. The ground churning into mud, an unknowable amount of fighting and bloodshed passing.

Then, clear as day, the memory of an arrow to his back, of his sudden tumble and death. Not too terrible, but he felt there was no use dwelling on it for too long either.

    ---

In the middle of the Sunshot Campaign, Wei Wuxian inexplicably repeats a harrowing winterday.
