    Summary

While the ship is laid over for a few days at Starbase 29, Kirk manages to convince Spock to spend some of their leave exploring a long-defunct building with him, hoping to uncover some of a Starfleet legend. Spock, who doesn't believe in such unfounded theories— and certainly not in ghosts— sees no harm in accompanying Kirk, if for no reason other than to protect him from his own imagination.

Inspired by the X-Files episode "How the Ghosts Stole Christmas" (can be read whether or not you've seen it).

    Summary

“Somethings never change, Mr. Spock,” the other Kirk stopped when he was directly behind Spock.

“Such as?” Spock asked, still staring straight ahead.

“Like how deeply I desire you,” Kirk said, his voice like melting honey, “How deeply you want me back.”

    “You are mistaken-”

“Am I?” Kirk spoke in a whisper, intimate, right in Spock’s ear. “Shall we see how our better halves are faring?”

Winner of the 2025 Gold Philon Award in the Long Fiction category

When Spock's mother played the new piano for the first time, he found himself strangely drawn to it. He peered inside at the obscenely bared viscera under the raised lid, wondered at the way the hammers danced and the strings shook. Then, he curled his fingers over the edge of the open instrument, and suddenly he knew the truth.

It was not just the strings; the whole instrument vibrated. And when he touched it, the vibration rattled in his own bones. Sympathetic resonance.

And he thought to himself, almost nonsensically: Only something human could thrum like this.
