“… Gintoki?”
A familiar kimono drifted into his vision as careful footsteps approached. He laughed, high-pitched and sickly, quickly pulling away; his eyes stayed resolutely to the ground as he stood once more. He felt more than he saw Zura at the doorway, glancing between them with confusion and worry, and the other two hovering behind him.
He—he couldn’t do this. Not again. Without saying anything, he hopped over the balcony like one would a fence, darting off down the streets of Kabukicho. The shouts behind him washed over him and away, like waves on a beach.

"Someone has to keep an eye on you in all this snow, it’s almost as tall as you are—“ Shinsuke drops Gintoki into said snow and starts walking without the extra weight, rolling his shoulders. “Hey, you bastard, get back here!”
Pausing, Shinsuke puts on a show of looking around for him, face still completely neutral. Only Gintoki's matted, not-quite-silver-anymore hair sticks out around the trail they’ve carved, the rest of him swallowed by powdery-white.
“That’s strange. I thought I heard an irritating voice, but there’s nothing here but snow,” he replies slowly, smugly. Gintoki groans and flails his good arm in his direction.
“Pick me back up before I decide to do it myself. The snow is soaking through my pants, and it’s freezing my dick off, you asshole.”

Gintoki didn’t have a word for the lights in the sky that sometimes appeared over the battlefields he scoured for food when they emptied of the living. He heard them before he saw them, great big booms that echoed across the wastes like thunder and had him scrambling for the nearest cover out of instinct. He held still there, branches tearing at his cheeks and exposed skin, and hardly dared to breathe in the following silence. He flinched with every following roar until he found the courage to lift his head in one of the breaks in sound. Colors burst in the sky, red and orange like sunsets, even though the night itself was black and clouded.
It seemed less scary then. Maybe the closest thing to beauty he had back then, though it made the sky fill with grey smog that blocked the stars. He sat in the brush with twigs in his hair and watched explosions bloom in the sky like flowers until he no longer flinched at the sight and sound of them. He watched them with wide eyes and parted lips until the last light finally burned out and left him in pitch.

It starts with a cough. At first, he assumes he’s just coming down with something–not really unusual for him, especially around this time of year. The weather has been brisk, and he took a dive into the canal last night on a job until Kagura and Shinpachi fished him out. Plenty of reasons why he’d been catching a cold, so he doesn’t think much of it. Why would he?
It’s damn persistent, is the thing.

“Oh, it’s gonna be my birthday soon,” Fuku says one day, in the midst of weaving flowers into Gintoki’s bird’s nest of hair.
“Congrats,” he replies, wondering what the big deal was. Five to six didn’t seem like such a big jump. Just meant he’d have to listen to her count on her fingers one extra number every time someone asked her age or during her math homework. Shouyou sometimes gave them extra snacks or toys for whatever reason, so he supposed she was excited for that.

Gintoki has a lot in common with other anime mentors. The white hair, the tragic backstory, the taste for sadism... yeah, he could totally pull off a killer Kakashi cosplay if he wanted to. There's one thing that sets him apart from all of those other losers, though: Gin-san is the protagonist of his story. There's no way he'll get fridged or killed off when he's the guy selling DVDs!!!
or: Gojo and Gintoki swap universes. It'd be a little concerning if the narration wasn't brushing past it like it was nothing but a device for comedy.
