Summary
Rockstar Eddie Munson needs a fake boyfriend after a scandal; enter high end escort Steve Harrington. Unfortunately Eddie's heart didn't get the memo on the 'fake' part of the deal, while the more time he spends with Steve the deeper he falls, the closer he gets to something that looks a whole lot darker than a college student just trying to pay off his student loans.
“For you, your highness.” Eddie bent at the waist as he offered the cheap stuffed animal.
Steve’s eyes went wide, but he accepted the little stuffed animal, holding it up for inspection. Some of the stitches were visible and his eyes were lopsided, but it didn’t change the way Eddie’s heart stuttered as Steve very gently touched its nose against his own, holding it like it were an actual small creature and not cotton and thread.
“What’s his name?”
“Bernard,” Steve said with such confidence that Eddie couldn’t help laughing.
“What?” Steve said, looking mildly affronted.
Eddie grinned. “No, it’s a great name, Bernard the Bat. Berry for short even.”
Steve crossed his arms, but with the stuffed animal it looked more like he was hugging it to his chest.
“Slushies?” Eddie said before he could do anything stupid.

“Steve,” Robin finally said, her voice sounding desperate. “What about you? If it does work, I thought this was dangerous?”
He stared at her for a long time before his gaze flicked down to a devastated looking Dustin.
He wasn’t doing this just for Eddie.
“It’s the only way.” His eyes shifted to a bright, inhuman gold that glowed in the murky light of the Upside Down. He could feel his canines lengthen in his mouth as looked down to Eddie’s shoulder and felt the urge to bite.
Eddie was so still. He’d never seen him so still. He was so animated and full of life all the time, seeing him like this terrified Steve.

Or: Steve is confused and scared due to symptoms from his head trauma, and Eddie helps him while doing his best to convince Steve he's worth helping.

It’s just music.
It’s just practice.
It’s just Steve singing like that on purpose-
(he is doing it on purpose, Eddie is convinced of this)Steve can’t look at Eddie for more than three seconds without flirting.
Eddie forgets how words work every time Steve smiles at him.So naturally, they handle this in the most mature way possible:
They panic.
They avoid eye contact.
They overthink everything.
They make it everyone else’s problem.(They are both one mildly intense conversation away from losing their minds.)

Summary
Dustin, Robin, and Nancy make it out. That’s all that matters.
Steve isn’t self-sacrificial, at least not intentionally, but it’s no question that he’d get those three out of literal hell before himself. It only makes sense.
So now, he’s stuck in the Upside Down with a half-dead nerd he barely knows.
A journey through Steve’s relationships with himself and the most important people in his life: a lesbian, a know-it-all kid et al., his ex-girlfriend, a DM (whatever the hell that is), the DM’s uncle, and everyone else who seems to have wormed their way into his life since 1983.
(Or, how getting trapped in Hell on Earth with Eddie “The Freak” Munson puts every other relationship Steve has ever had into perspective.)
