Jon stared after her for the barest breath, his heart thundering hard enough to hurt. Then he moved. “Dany.”
She did not stop. Her fingers found the latch, though not cleanly. He saw the tremor in her hand before he reached her, saw the way her shoulders had drawn tight beneath the pale fall of her hair and braids. By the time he came up behind her, she was fumbling with the metal as if her hands no longer belonged to her.
Jon crowded close, one hand braced against the door beside her, the other catching at her waist without force. His forehead came down against the intricate weave of her braids, the contact shuddering through him as sharply as if he had walked into winter water. She went very still beneath him, her breath catching, and for one awful moment he thought she might wrench herself away regardless.
“Stay,” he whispered, the word rough enough that it scarcely sounded like him at all. “Please. Don’t leave me.”
