“—and I know that there’s Becca and Tanner and Millie to consider, but I was wondering if you maybe wanted to move in? Together? With me?”
Mel blinks. He certainly doesn’t look like he’s having a stroke.
“Frank, why would we move in together?”
“I thought it might be nice,” he shrugs here, acting nonchalant even though Mel can see the tension in his jaw. “To take that next step in our relationship.”
“Frank, what are you talking about? We’re not in a relationship?”
At this, Frank’s frown deepens before widening into a frustrated half smile. “Uh, yes we are? We’ve been dating for nine months?”
What.
Or, Frank thinks Mel doesn’t do physical touch.

Summary
They were friends.
And yeah, maybe the ring on his finger sort of burned when he looked at her sometimes, even though it was just for show, now.
It was just easier to let her keep thinking he was still married to Abby. Safer.
It raised less eyebrows about the nature of their friendship when the ring stayed on while he was at work, the weight on his finger reminding him not to say or do anything stupid.
It also made it a little less creepy when the pet names started slipping out.

Summary
He can feel eyes on his back as they walk away. Mel reaches the curtain first and flicks it aside, her braid swinging between her shoulder blades. “Hi, Becca,” she says, voice softening in a way Frank has only ever heard her use with kids and trauma patients. “This is Dr. Langdon. He’ll be taking care of you.”
“You have really nice hair, Dr. Langdon,” Becca announces.
Frank blinks. Compliments, as a category, are not something he has been fielding a lot of lately. He feels himself flush, ridiculous and adolescent, like someone just told him they liked his sneakers in the high school hallway.
“Oh,” he says, and actually meets her eyes to make sure she sees he means it. “Thank you.”
He turns to Mel, grateful for something to do with his hands. “Mel, would you mind turning off the lights on your way out?”
There’s a tiny beat. Then her mouth does this small, precise curve that you’d miss if you didn’t know to look for it.
“Of course,” she says.

Summary
“I’m not leaving,” he says, “But we don’t have to talk about it right now if you don’t want. Becca’s all taken care of, and Emma’s getting her discharged. Okay?”
Despite everything, she nods.
“Okay.”
Langdon smiles, the left corner of his lips pulling gently to the side, awkward and earnest, and sits—crisscross applesauce, Mel thinks— in front of her. “Okay about Becca, or okay let’s talk?”
Mel takes a deep breath in. She thinks about the photo on her phone, arms wound tightly around her father’s bicep, and the petulant feeling in her gut on the swing set. She thinks about the burning feeling she would get whenever she saw Becca leap through the air, looking for all the world like an angel, setting sun lighting her brunette pigtails into a vibrant orange, and names it.
Envy.
She exhales slowly.
“Okay,” Mel says, finally looking at Langdon directly. “Okay, let’s talk.”
