Lifeguarding at Buddy Beach is pretty simple. Plus, the job comes with plenty of perks: free snacks, a whistle, and an exasperated on-site medic named Miles Edgeworth, to name a few. Phoenix thinks he has it pretty good.
Maya throws her pen at his eyebrow with surprisingly good aim.
“Ow!”
“Will you stop drooling over the medical staff and at least pretend you’re doing your job?” she says. She shoves her clipboard and walkie-talkie into his stomach. “You’ve got people to watch.”

Ear-burning, forthright truths revealed rarely, randomly, and in the tones of a comment on the weather: Miles’ specialty. Phoenix is about to melt from the inside out. It’ll create a horror scene (in the name of love) and result in a stain that Mr. Soriel will never be able to fully get out, but then, a curiosity eats through all of that, leaving nothing behind except the question: “Wait. What happened in 2024?”
And Miles says, “I’m not telling you.”
Phoenix and Miles take a trip to the tailors to get adjustments made ahead of their wedding. Something passes between them that, deep down, they already know, and a spontaneous decision gets made. Written for the Right Words nrmt zine.

Summary
As far as Miles can tell, Agent Lang's initial impression of certified hot mess Phoenix "That Man" Wright upon their first meeting wasn't exactly the most positive, and tragically enough, it's not like Miles can really blame him for having that perception.
That said, they both probably should've known that Phoenix hadn't been named the Turnabout Terror for nothing.
(Or: what it means to judge solely based on first appearances and then have all of your expectations rocked off-balance, especially when they revolve around one of the most outstanding attorneys the criminal justice system has ever known).

Miles Edgeworth, the feared pirate captain, is on a suicide mission no one can distract him from, no matter how hard his sister and his friends try to dissuade him. Closed off and angry, he has unwillingly turned his whole crew against him by denying them to make port, too focused on his revenge to see the mutiny brewing right under his nose. Until Phoenix, a stowaway with earnest brown eyes and a dry sense of humor, disrupts his plans with a charming personality and his tendency for loud, erratic gestures.
It's clear to everyone that their new deckhand is not as defenseless as he seems to be, but there are more pressing matters to attend to for the crew of the Steel, namely: the attempted murder of the Captain and his rivalry against the British Crown as a whole. Franziska, Kay and Sebastian will try to save their Captain from himself. Phoenix will help, in his own way.

Miles has always been good at hiding his emotions, but his expression is absolutely steely now in a way that Phoenix has never seen it. He has no idea what Miles might be thinking, which is probably the scariest part of all this.
Phoenix swallows against the lump forming in his throat. “O-ob-objection?” he stutters out nervously.

Phoenix is minding his own business, wistfully and pathetically rereading his texts with Edgeworth when Pearls walks up to him, asks him, “Mr. Nick, who’s your sugar dah-dee?” and walks away before he can respond. Understandably, Phoenix’s brain takes about 3-5 business days to reset and fully process the statement; he wakes up in a cold sweat a week later.
“Holy shit,” Phoenix says, “I have a sugar daddy.”

Edgeworth stopped partway through stacking a pile of papers, “Ah, yes.” He said. “Of course, Your Honor.” He paused, “You- You see… The thing is… W-Well, I have been just been notified of… My- That is to say that… Phoenix Wright…” He faltered.
The bailiff tittered for a moment, watching Edgeworth stumble, before blurting out, “Mr. Wright has been shot, Your Honor!”

“I think I have a case,” she continued. Miles did not interrupt. She cleared her throat, stood up, and pointed straight at him. “Uncle Miles, everything in my investigation proves that you are in love with Daddy!”
