When Itachi wakes up, the taste of his last words to Sasuke still lingering on his tongue, the sweet Konoha air filling his lungs, he thinks, this must be heaven.
His second thought is, it cannot possibly be heaven, for if there were truly any justice in the world, he would never be allowed inside.
"Nii-san!" comes the delighted shout, and a pair of skinny arms are wrapped around his middle, and Itachi is forced to re-evaluate his first theory, because there is no way, absolutely no way, that he deserves heaven and his brother in the same breath.

Summary
The Dragon Goddess Sothis watched over all of the beasts of the land of Fodlan with the rest of her kind. She gifted a group of her closest followers with crests, powerful boons meant to be advantageous in leading the rest of their kind. However, one rose up in rebellion against her, the Fell King Rex. He slaughtered the divine dragons, and desecrated their bodies, forging powerful weapons with their bones. However, after her death, the Goddess blessed certain individuals, chosen to rise up, to lead the people of Fodlan, to guide them towards prosperity. They became known as the Beastars. The first of which waged war against Fell King Rex, eventually killing him, and ending his rule.
All of this became ancient history, but the power and reverence for the crests remained, along with worship of the Dragon Goddess. The land of Fodlan was united under the Church of the Sublime Beastar. Being born with a crest was one of the greatest blessings one could receive, the nobility shaped around crests. This was how the world worked.
