Each year apprentices clamour to apply for the role of 'companion' to one of the Hogwarts' staff; a tradition dating back to long before the Statute of Secrecy. A magically-bonded contract is signed between an established witch or wizard and a younger apprentice. The companion then takes care of any physical needs of their master or mistress in return for access to all of their resources and entry to prestigious events, giving them a significant advantage. The role is never advertised, but is well known among purebloods, and positions are normally bargained for long before muggleborns even hear about them. Hermione grabs her chance when a fellow apprentice drops out of school, and the role of companion to the potions master suddenly becomes vacant. She then has to quickly learn what it means to 'submit', and prove that she can carry out her duties just as well as any pureblood, all while navigating the complex traditions that govern the top echelons of wizarding society.
