Because contrary to what he’s believed since Robert runed him, Magnus is not and might never have been Alec’s last chance. He was Alec’s biggest and best chance; but his last chance is sitting before him, and has just given him the opening he has been praying for to a higher power he probably doesn’t believe in anymore.

Summary
“Where is Alec Lightwood?” The Seelie Queen cuts off the rest of Isabelle’s sentence.
Magnus watches as Isabelle freezes at her brother’s name and for a moment her face breaks it’s stoic countenance and pure grief sweeps across her painted features. Magnus feels his heart drop out of his chest. Isabelle breathes in and Magnus hopes she is going to say he is busy, or unavailable or off in Alicante.
“Alec…” she begins and squeezes her eyes shut as if that will stop the tears Magnus can now see clinging to her eyelashes.
He doesn’t know how he is standing upright when the world around him is tilting. Raphael or at least he thinks it is Raphael grabs onto his arm. His touch is the only thing keeping Magnus in the present.
“Alec Ascended.” It isn’t Isabelle who speaks and the Seelie around him are reaching for weapons. Jace walks to stand next to Isabelle. His face is the picture of a man broken and something in Magnus fractures at the sight of his Alexander’s other half so devastated. It is confirmation that everything in the world is wrong.
