Four days ago, in the light of an ice bear fridge, Harry had held a crumpled bullet in his hands, stained with purge fluid, and told you to keep it, lieutenant; as a gift. You’d turned it down at the time. You hadn’t particularly wanted to carry around a used bullet, no matter how important to the case it might be. Do you regret it? Probably not. But you are still owed something from this man, and, if there’s one thing you’ve gotten good at over the years, it’s patiently waiting until you can take what you deserve.

He’s not disturbed by the unity, he’s inexplicably moved by it. The way one is moved by a chorus in perfect harmony, a ballet company’s sharp collective choreography, a squadron of soldiers’ neat march. There is something mind-numbingly pleasing about observing a many-headed crowd moving and speaking as one unit. Perhaps that is why this is called a mass.
