She wouldn’t make the connection for weeks. But then, Rost had never given her any kind of talk, except to tell her once, stiffly, that if she started to bleed between her legs, not to be concerned unless it lasted more than a week. This had been on her eleventh birthday, delivered with a stack of bandages. He had never told her that a person’s smile might one day make her stomach churn.
