The foreign hammer vibrates by his side, as if hungry for blood. Words of his own and not tear through his head. Again and again. He has no strength left for tears. There is nowhere to run. And then Viktor opens his eyes.
They are soft, galaxies swirling inside, and his partner's lips curve up in a smile. Familiar. Gentle. He drops the hammer, the Mage’s voice loud in his head, speaking of the incoming ruin, of eternal, dull stillness of life. But he can't do this. He failed. Viktor is not a man he can kill, never him. Not even for the sake of the world.
(Jayce immediately folds upon seeing Viktor in the commune and does not kill him. It goes better than he thought.)

Piltover’s Defender of Tomorrow dies on Wednesday evening. By Thursday, the announcement hits the morning gazette, and it won’t leave the news cycle until well past the Sunday edition.
Zaun’s Machine Herald scoffs the first time he reads it, tossing the stained and torn paper that his apprentice brought down the conveyor behind his shoulder. He is rewiring his left arm again, trying to iron out why his sensors detect a microsecond’s delay between the synapses firing in his brain and the acknowledgement by his mechanical nerves.
“Natural causes,” he scoffs. “He is what? Sixty years old? Men that rich do not die that young.”

Summary
Amidst the war efforts against invasion by Ambessa Medarda, Jayce goes missing. He finds himself below in the locked down leftovers of Zaun, finding someone he thought long gone, accompanied by one of the last thought-to-be-dead people he would've expected.
Viktor, the unusual mage healer and leader of The Commune, unexpectedly has his past unrequited love dropped on his doorstep before him and his De-facto right hand, and he discovers those long buried emotions were not unrequited after all. However...are they enough to convince him to help in the war, when the one thing he's the most afraid of is not Noxus, or Ambessa, or the fall of Piltover; it is in fact, himself.
